With five teams in the top 13 of Tuesday's preseason AP Top 25 for women's basketball, the ACC looks to be a powerhouse in 2022-2023. Louisville, Notre Dame, NC State, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech made up the ACC's projected top five in the media voted preseason poll announced on Wednesday. Behind them came Miami in sixth and the Blue Devils in seventh.
Coming off Kara Lawson's first full season as head coach in which the Blue Devils went 17-13, Duke has tournament aspirations this season. The Blue Devils started last season strong, winning each of their first eight games (including a win against top ten ranked Iowa) before losing to eventual national champion South Carolina in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
After spending much of the season ranked, Duke never imagined they would miss the tournament, but a tough loss to UNC at home on January 27th was the first domino in what would become eight losses in their final eleven regular season games. Battling with injuries did not help Duke's cause. But now returning stars Celeste Taylor and Shayeann Day-Wilson look to lead Duke to its first tour meant appearance since 2018.
Reigning ACC coaches poll rookie of the year Shayeann Day-Wilson was left off the preseason All-ACC team.
The Blue Devils will be in front of fans at An open practice in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. They will also make an appearance at Countdown to Craziness on Oct. 21.
