Junior point guard Jeremy Roach was named the lone senior captain Thursday afternoon, head coach Jon Scheyer announced.
Perhaps a no-brainer pick for captain, Roach is the only returning player with more than a year of experience on the team or to have started in a game last season. With a young and new group of Blue Devils this season, Roach is one of the few familiar faces for Duke fans. Amongst a group of seven freshmen and four transfers, Roach is one of just two returning scholarship players this season; alongside sophomore guard Jaylen Blakes.
In his first year as head coach, Scheyer is tasked with bringing a brand new roster together.
Having an experienced floor general like Roach will prove tremendously helpful in accomplishing this goal.
Roach ended last season on a strong note, averaging nearly 12 PPG and earning All-Regional honors in the NCAA Tournament en route to a Final Four.
Roach is in a similar position to former lone captain and point guard Quinn Cook, who Roach says he has been in consistent contact with in a recent video published by the team. He is now the captain of a young, but talented group of players who have the potential to hang banners.
